The First Armon Florizel Stanford Bursary Awarded to Open Campus Youth Development Student
Office of the Campus Registrar, Jamaica. March 31, 2017: A small ceremony was held at The UWI Museum on Monday, March 27, 2017 to celebrate the presentation of a bursary in the amount of US$2,000 to the Open Campus of The University of the West Indies (UWI) awarded by UWI alumnus, Mr. Lloyd C. Stanford and family. Mr. Lloyd Stanford is, among other things, a former Canadian Federal Civil Servant who worked on multiculturalism as a central feature of Canada's federalism. He is an executive of The UWI Alumni Association. The Armon Florizel Stanford Bursary, named in memory of Mr. Stanford’s father, will support the cost of tuition for full time study of an undergraduate degree at The UWI of Ms. Deborah Wilson, who is a registered student at the UWI Open Campus Site at Camp Road in Jamaica. This donation will enable Ms. Wilson to complete her Bachelor of Science degree in Youth Development Work. Although Mr. Stanford, who lives in Ottawa, Canada, was not able to attend the ceremony in person, several close friends represented the Stanford family in Jamaica, namely Ambassador Anthony Hill, Dr. Lawson Douglas, The Honourable Mr. Justice Paul Harrison and his sister, Miss Ouida Harrison, Miss Fay Rhone, and Mrs. Carol Hibbert.
In his short remarks, Ambassador Hill noted that Mr. Stanford had set up the bursary as part of an endowment that he plans to build up to support work at two of The UWI campuses, i.e. Mona and the Open Campus. Ambassador Hill also traced the historical connection between the two families, as Mr. Stanford’s father was a contemporary of his father, Kenneth George Hill. Both men, said Ambassador Hill, were colleague volunteer workers, activists and pioneers in the first third of the 20th century in Jamaica, who laboured through the fledgling trade union movement, local government and other national institutions for the self- development of Jamaicans. The senior Stanford, he further noted, could be described as one of those often unheralded Jamaicans who strongly believed in voluntary community service and the value of education.
Mrs. Karen Ford-Warner, Campus Registrar of the Open Campus, also expressed her deep appreciation to the Stanford family for continuing to support the students of the institution through their generous contributions to The UWI, but especially for their generosity with this bursary that will allow Ms. Wilson to complete her studies at the Open Campus in an area of importance to the Stanford family. Director of UWI Alumni Relations, Mrs. Celia Davidson-Francis, also thanked and congratulated Mr. Lloyd Stanford for his continued dedication and support of The UWI as the official UWI Alumni Association contact in Ottawa, Canada. She revealed that, “This bursary is only a part of what Lloyd has personally donated this year – he has given over US$9000 – which we are most appreciative of. Lloyd is a true UWI and Taylor Hall stalwart and we are celebrate and congratulate his generosity.”
