Introduction to Counselling Young Adults and Adolescents

Course Description

The main objective of this course is to provide participants with basic interviewing skills, listening techniques and basic counseling skills required by paraprofessionals working with adolescents and young adults. Students are provided an overview of developmental psychology with an emphasis on adolescence.  

Purpose
The purpose of this course is to provide paraprofessionals in the field of human services with basic counseling and referral skills.

Aims
This course aims to expose participants to three basic theories of counseling and skills and techniques for interacting with adolescents.

Course Objectives

  • Demonstrate understanding of the stages of development, particularly adolescence
  • Explain when and how to make a referral to agencies and other professionals
