Project Management

Course Description

Traditional project management techniques, since the 1950’s, have been based on the

Critical Path Method (CPM) and Earned-Value (EV) analysis. Since their introduction,

modest changes to the state-of-the-art have been introduced, and still most construction

projects exhibit cost overruns and delays. Therefore, improvements in understanding and

applying these existing tools and strategies for planning, scheduling, and project control

are still required to ensure acceptable performance of projects on a consistent basis.

This course is designed to expose participants to the basic principles of project

management that is generally accepted and recognized as good practice inline with the

standards of Project Management Institute (PMI), the leading global association for the

project management profession since 1969. Participants will learn to develop basic

project management skills that can be applied immediately using step-by-step planning,

monitoring, controlling and delivering project scope, quality, time, and costs taking risks

into consideration.

These learning objectives are to be reinforced by a case-study that is developed within the

sessions both manually and using Microsoft Project application, and a course project that

allows the student to apply the principles and use the tools they have learnt. The course

will also cover strategies, concepts, definitions, and practices whose understanding is

required to pass PMI’s Project Management Professionals (PMP), or Certified Associates

in Project Management (CAPM) examinations.

The format of the course, as summarized in the course outline, is to be a hands-on

workshop that includes theory and application by practical exercises that will reinforce

the learning and knowledge of practicing aspects of project management. Reviews at the

end of each session throughout the course will be facilitated to include a question/answer

period that further underpins key concepts in preparation for the PMI certification

examinations.

Participants will be encouraged to group into teams who will work together during the

course as in a “real-world” project environment throughout a modeled project life cycle

using the tools and techniques presented in the course to enable participants to experience

the process and effectiveness of collaborative project implementation firsthand.
