Codrington International School Student Donates to The UWI Open Campus

St. Vincent and the Grenadines Recovery Effort

Office of the Deputy Principal. May 17, 2021 On Monday, May 10, 2021, Dr. Francis O. Severin, Deputy Principal of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Open Campus received on behalf of the Campus a donation of food and other household items from Ms. Sierra St-Georges, a student of the Codrington International School located in St. John, Barbados. The Codrington International School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum school with students from all over the world. The school offers a curriculum for children aged three (3) through eighteen (18) years. Currently, there are students from twenty-eight (28) nationalities.

The Codrington International School Middle Years Programme, level 3 (MYP3) curriculum requires students to complete a "Community Project" to benefit communities either locally or regionally. Ms. St-Georges chose to make an "emergency response kit" to send items needed in emergency situations to The UWI. She selected The UWI Open Campus since it is recognized as an emergency hub for persons in need subsequent to natural hazards across the region. Funds were raised to create the kit which is expected to assist during crisis situations. However, considering the recent volcanic eruption in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Sierra felt the items collected could assist the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. She expressed that in recognition of all the natural disasters that frequent the Caribbean such as hurricanes, storms, floods, earthquakes, volcanoes, the donation seemed like the best use of the community projects’ efforts.

Deputy Principal Dr. Severin expressed gratitude to Ms. St-Georges, and commended her for her values of sensitivity, care, humanity and concern for people who were experiencing a difficult moment in their lives. He underscored that such values at her early age will serve humanity well. The donation will be sent along with others as part of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Recovery effort. Mrs. Sandra Griffith-Carrington, Open Campus Officer of Alumni Relations, has been coordinating the shipments on behalf of the Campus from Barbados to St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
