Office of the Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal. Wednesday, November 1, 2023—On Saturday, November 11, 2023, at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Global Campus Virtual Graduation Ceremony, Bachelor of Education graduand, with First Class Honours, Breya John, will represent the graduating class of 2023 as its Valedictorian.
Breya John
Ms. John, an Early Childhood Practitioner from the beautiful thirty-two islands of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, is an enthusiastic educator. Breya stated that she has always aspired to become an impactful educator, a journey which began during her childhood when the positive experiences she received from her parents paved the way for her love for educating others. “The sacrifices they made to be involved in my educational journey sparked my dedication and passion for teaching, which fueled my eagerness to give back to my community by providing free tutoring services to children who needed remedial assistance”, Breya explained.
Breya, who is currently employed by the Ministry of Education of St. Vincent and the Grenadines as a Primary School Educator, believes that teaching is not only a noble profession, but also an honourable lifestyle. “Teaching has profoundly influenced my interactions with my family, friends, colleagues, students, and everyone else I encounter”, said Breya.
Empowered by her mantra that the only person you are to be, is the person whom you decide to be in the moments that matter, she enrolled in the Bachelor of Education Early Childhood Development and Family Studies programme at The UWI Global Campus (formerly The UWI Open Campus). This decision enabled her to develop her teaching and learning philosophy around the centralised theme, “Like a gardener who provides the best conditions needed for plants to grow, it is the educator’s duty to create the optimal learning environment for his or her students to blossom into exceptional individuals, through creative and stimulating experiences, that provide the opportunities for each student to be captivated, persuaded, and meaningfully occupied with their knowledge acquisition”, stated the Class of 2023 Valedictorian.
Having completed her undergraduate degree with The UWI Global Campus, she plans to pursue a Master's in Speech and Language Therapy, a field, she noted, will greatly benefit the development of early childhood education in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. No doubt, this pursuit will aid in her quest towards contributing to the quality of life of others and guiding children towards becoming the best version of themselves.
As is customary, she will deliver the Valedictory Speech at the Graduation Ceremony on behalf of her fellow graduates from across the Region.
The UWI Global Campus is proud that Breya chose the Campus to fulfil her lifelong dreams and salute her on this significant academic accomplishment and wishes her success in her further endeavours. Staff, students, alumni and other well-wishers across the Region are invited to tune in to the Virtual Graduation Ceremony via www.uwitv.global, UWItv’s channels on Flow EVO or on Facebook live from 6:00 p.m. (Eastern Caribbean/AST) | 5:00 p.m. (Jamaica/EST) | 4:00 p.m. (BZE/CST).
