ON-LINE ACCESS TO DATABASES AT THE NCC UNIVERSITY CENTRES

All Campus Libraries were asked to request their Data Base Vendors to add the IP address of the UWIDEC Server to the products they supplied and in particular the three data bases described below which are common to all three campuses were specified. A subsequent check was done using the UWIDEC sites in Jamaica as a test. It was discovered that all sites in Jamaica could access these data bases but in some cases the EBSCO data base requested User ID and Password.

All Heads of University Centres were recently contacted and given instructions on how to access the data bases. They were in addition requested to respond indicating whether they had been successful. Two positive responses have been received so far, The Bahamas said Yes, Grenada said Yes but indicated that Passwords and user IDs were being requested by EBSCO. Since access is I P address controlled this should not have happened, however as a result, all Heads of NCCs are being sent EBSCO User IDs and Passwords which were originally restricted to the students in the M Ed Distance programme.

Further checks will be made to ascertain whether they are also able to access other data bases which are not common to the three campuses.

NB, The data bases which are now accessible are described below but it should be noted that they can only be accessed from the computer labs of the NCC University Centres.

WorldCat: OCLCcatalog of books, web resources, and other material worldwide

EBSCO HOST REASEARCH DATABASES

Academic Search Premier Provides full text for more than 3,460 scholarly publications covering academic areas of study including social sciences, humanities, education, computer sciences, engineering, language and linguistics, arts & literature, medical sciences, and ethnic studies.
Business Source Premier:  provides full text for over 2,800 scholarly business journals covering management, economics, finance, accounting, international business and much more
Business Wire News : is a full text newswire database that incorporates business wires from all over the world. Included in this database are A&G Information, Africa News Service, Inter Press Service, Resource News International, South American Business, M2 Communications, PR Newswire, Business News Wire, Canadian Corporate News, News Bytes News Network and Phillips Business Information Highlights. This database is updated on a daily basis
