Two pictures taken in the 1931 Demonstration
These photographs show the National Demonstration in Grenada against the Customs Bill. The event took place on October 28, 1931. The Government of the time had proposed a bill to increase tax on certain imports. This would have hurt the small man. T. A. Marryshow led the opposition to this bill and was supported by Joseph de la Mothe and some of the other nominated members to defeat the bill. However, the Government went ahead anyway. This demonstration to Government House was led by Marryshow. It was supported be prominent as well as humble people. The Colonel Secretary at this time was H.R.R Blood. Governor Sir Thomas Vans Best was thought to be a weak governor. All the "society" people who went up to Government House had their invitations to the party that was at Government House withdrawn. This caused an uproar in the society.
