Joint Programmes [no longer updated]

Formal joint programming is a very recent innovation at the UWI although it has a long history of study abroad and other comparatively informal links with other institutions. The first occurrence would have been in the Lomé IV Cariforum project - the Caribbean University Level Programme* - which involves a set of Masters programmes offered jointly with three universities in the Dominican Republic - Universidad Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU*), Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM*), and Universidad Católica de Santo Domingo (UCSD*). While originally it was envisaged that these would be administered and awarded jointly, they are now the responsibility of particular members of the consortium. For UWI, the programme is the responsibility of the Board for Graduate Studies and Research, and began in the 1998/99 academic year.

At the undergraduate level, the first formal joint programme also started in September 1998: a joint degree in tourism studies shared by the Mona campus and the University of Technology* in Jamaica. Similar arrangements have been made between the Barbados Community College and the Cave Hill campus. Roughly the same programme will also be offered in conjunction with Antigua State College and with various agencies in the Bahamas, notably the College of the Bahamas.

Another jointly operated programme began in earnest in 1999: a BA in the Teaching of French, in collaboration with the Université des Antilles et de la Guyane* (UAG) in Martinique. This has students taking their first year part-time by distance education, followed by an on-campus year in Martinique and a final on-campus year at our Cave Hill campus. Successful students will receive a DEUG from UAG at the end of their year in Martinique and a BA from UWI at the end of the entire programme.
