THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES %u2013 GLOBAL CAMPUSCEREMONY FOR THE PRESENTATION OF GRADUATES 202487Medical Station and Accessibility RampIn collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Wellness, and the Environment, The UWI Five Islands Campus inaugurated a new medical station staffed by two nurses and an Emergency Medical Technician. Additionally, a newly constructed ramp now provides improved accessibility between the Administrative Block and classroom areas, promoting inclusivity for differently abled students and staff.Centre of Excellence for Oceanography and the Blue Economy (COBE) LaunchedThe Centre of Excellence for Oceanography and the Blue Economy (COBE) was launched on May 30, 2024, during the 4th Small Island Developing States (SIDS4) conference. This Centre aims to advance regional expertise in marine science, renewable energy, and maritime policy, contributing to the Caribbean's sustainable development in marine industries. The Centre was established through the collaborative efforts of the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, The UWI, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). Global SIDS4 ConferenceThe UWI Five Islands Campus played a vital role in the SIDS4 Conference held in Antigua and Barbuda, which focused on addressing the unique challenges of Small Island Developing States. Several members of the Campus were involved either as panellists or participants in this global conference. The Five Islands Campus also hosted the SIDS Global Children & Youth Action Summit (CYAS), amplifying youth voices on critical global issues.Annual Child Research Conference In collaboration with UNICEF, The UWI Five Islands Campus hosted the 18th Annual Caribbean Child Research Conference under the theme, \for Every Child\rights and safety across the Caribbean. The conference took place from November 29 %u2013 30, 2023 and saw participation from regional and international stakeholders. Strategic Memoranda of UnderstandingThe UWI Five Islands Campus signed several important Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs), including:%u2022 A partnership with the International Seabed Authority to advance oceanography and blue economy research. Funds totalling US$250,000 have been committed to this effort by the International Seabed Authority. %u2022 A collaboration with the Government of Antigua and Barbuda to enhance education and technical capacity for law enforcement, focusing on modern security solutions and leadership development.Five Islands Campus First Guild Carnival The UWI Five Islands Guild hosted its first FIC Carnival, themed \promoting unity and Caribbean culture among students and staff. Rex Nettleford Distinguished LectureThe second Rex Nettleford Foundation Distinguished Lecture was hosted at the Five Islands Campus. It was delivered by Dr. Howard Dodson, former Director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, continuing the Campus' commitment to thought leadership in Caribbean studies.
