On Thursday, 12 October 2023, UWI Global Campus Dominica and the Division of Culture hosted the 12th Annual E.O. LeBlanc Memorial Lecture as part of UWI’s 75th Anniversary activities.
The event, which forms part of Dominica’s National Calendar of Independence Activities, highlighted the country’s History Week theme: The National Wear. It was a panel discussion activity and there were three main presenters:
- Mr. Raymond Lawrence, Retired Chief Cultural Officer: “Wearing Culture: The progression of the National Wear as part of Cultural Celebrations”
- Ms. Aileen Burton, Retired Cultural Officer: "A glimpse of history: The evolution of Dominica’s Creole Wear”
- Mrs. Delia Cuffy-Weekes, Cultural Advocate: “Beyond October: Blending the National Wear into Contemporary Lifestyles”
The Discussion’s Moderator was Mrs. Loreen Bannis-Roberts, Former Minister of Culture.
The emphasis of this lecture series is on the preservation and development of the rich cultural heritage of our country and the Caribbean region. E.O. Le Blanc, Dominica’s first Premier, was devoted to culture and was an avid reader and poet.
