Course Description

This course explores the historical, philosophical and theoretical underpinnings which influence early childhood education and family studies, as well as the issues and trends which impact the field. It also takes an in depth look at how pioneers have helped shape the development and implementation of contemporary early childhood programmes both regionally and internationally. It allows participants to increase their level of competency in practice and provides the requisite theoretical and practical foundation for further understanding in the field of early childhood development. Finally, after critical reflection of the views of theorists and current practices participants will articulate their own philosophy of early childhood education and evaluate its worthiness.

Course Objectives

On completion of the course, learners will be able to:

Knowledge

  1. Outline the historical development of early childhood education both internationally and regionally.
  2. Describe the major contributions and approaches of pioneers within the field of early childhood.
  3. Critique the theories which have influenced early childhood education and the development of early childhood practices.
  4. Compare and contrast various theories that have contributed to our understanding of young children.
  5. Analyse and evaluate how the history and leading philosophies of early childhood education have influenced contemporary early childhood development initiatives.
  6. Justify early childhood initiatives in the Caribbean showing how they have influenced the development on early childhood care and education in the region.
  7. State the factors that fuelled the expansion of early childhood programmes explaining their effectiveness on the development of early childhood education.
  8. Explain the purpose, uses and benefits of play as a medium for teaching young children.
  9. Outline the fundamental principles that constitute a reflective practitioner in early childhood education.

  2. Assess professional self knowledge and engage in reflective inquiry in order to enhance professional attributes.
  3. Reflect on the professional and personal qualities of effective early childhood educators in order to modify personal attributes.

  5. Reflect on their personal philosophy of early childhood education to evaluate its worthiness.
