This comprehensive introductory course provides the learner with core knowledge, practical skills and tools to manage and lead a non-governmental organization, effectively. Participants will examine the definition of NGOs. They will learn about the history of NGOs within a Caribbean context and the various types of development aid, the main organizations involved and their different approaches to development. Participants will also discuss perspectives and challenges of sustainable development. The relevance of NGOs and their role in the social economic and cultural development of the region will be analyzed. Participants will learn how to select tools for fundraising and resource mobilisation. Additionally, this course will provide the opportunity for an examination of Advocacy and Lobbying practice; challenges to Lobbying within the Caribbean and an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of Advocacy and Lobbying. Participants will compare and contrast main Advocacy and Lobbying strategies within developed and developing countries.
This course provides a framework for understanding the interrelated process of the project management cycle and how it is used in developing projects for grant funding. This course further delves into the budgeting for and financial management of a project while taking into consideration the requirements of a funder. Learners are provided with a brief look into monitoring and evaluation of a project to show what was accomplished and if the project met its intended goal.
Participants shall be exposed to a variety of theoretical underpinnings that guide entrepreneurship and small business development. Through the development of a small business plan, the participant shall be provided with practical and real-life examples of small business management and entrepreneurship. The course will include advertising, marketing and promotion techniques such as segmenting your market, understanding brands and planning how to sell your products or services.
This course will increase understanding and awareness of managing staff, and developing leadership skills. Areas to be covered will include theoretical underpinnings to discuss leadership and management, human resource management, motivation and reward, conflict resolution and managing self.
