About the Consortium
The Consortium for Social Development and Research (CSDR) is responsible for the academic research priorities of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Global Campus. The Division comprises four semi-autonomous research units - Hugh Shearer Labour Studies Institute, Social Work Training and Research Centre, Women and Development Unit and Caribbean Child Development Centre, inclusive of the Bloom Early Childhood Centres of Excellence.
The CSDR continuously seeks to contribute to the social development of Caribbean societies, strengthen the human potential of citizens and promote the University of the West Indies, especially in non-traditional areas, through research, training and education, curriculum development, development projects, technical assistance, community outreach and public service.

Research
The four units of the CSDR aim to collaborate on initiatives in areas of common interest, particularly to further the mission of the University to meet the needs of underserved populations throughout the Caribbean region.
The CSDR units share common strategies in the use of research, training and outreach activities as the mechanisms for meeting identified social needs, and have accumulated decades of experience in the development of community initiatives, training programmes and action research.

- A Legislative Review of Restrictive Provisions Governing Women’s Access to Abortion in the Eastern Caribbean
- Transitional Living Programme for Children in State Care
- A Longitudinal study on a transitional housing intervention in Jamaica
- Trauma informed care for State care staff in the Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) Jamaica.
- Children’s use of media in Jamaica
- Teaching of Literacy at Grade 1 in primary schools in Jamaica
- Strengthening of Networks and Services that improve Citizen’s Access to and Experience of the Justice System in Jamaica
- Flexible Work Arrangements among four selected Government Agencies - National Water Commission, National Works Agency, National Housing Trust and HEART Trust.
Facilities
The Consortium offers a variety of facilities that are versatile both in utility and set-up. Our suite of amenities include seminar rooms, classrooms, a computer lab and a library. Each meeting or lecture room has access to Wi-Fi and video conferencing technology. The facilities are available for educational, professional and private services.

The CSDR aligns it work to the mandate of The UWI to promote greater activism and public advocacy. This is done through a three-pronged approach of research, teaching and community engagement conducted by the four units.
