The UWI Regional Headquarters, Jamaica. June 11, 2021—The American Foundation for the University of the West Indies (AFUWI), and UWItv will host a virtual roundtable in celebration of the National Caribbean American Heritage Month in the US, on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at 7:00-8:30pm (EDT). The theme of the roundtable is “Reparatory Justice & Economic Equity for the African & Caribbean Diaspora…If Not Now…When?”

Ann-Marie Grant, Executive Director of the AFUWI noted, “We are honoured to have been able to assemble a virtual panel of distinguished presenters to explore this very provocative topic.  As the debate on reparatory justice intensifies, there are many different opinions and the AFUWI and UWItv are pleased to share intellectual discourse from informed Diaspora representatives.”

The panel for the roundtable includes: The Honourable Oral Holder, Consul General of Barbados to New York; Professor Verene Shepherd, Director, Centre for Reparation Research, The University of the West Indies (The UWI); L. Joy Williams, President, Brooklyn National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP); Dr. Jermaine McCalpin, Reparations and Genocide Scholar and will be moderated by Felicia Persaud, Mass Communications Expert and CEO of Invest Caribbean.

The roundtable which airs live on www.uwitv.org will feature an interactive Q&A session allowing for wider participation across the Caribbean region and diaspora.

ABOUT AFUWI

A 501(c) (3) charitable organisation, the American Foundation for The University of the West Indies (AFUWI) was established in 1956 to develop an endowment fund in the United States for The University of the West Indies (UWI). Today, its mission is to source and administer private donations, maximise philanthropic efforts, and develop strategic alliances with American corporations, foundations, alumni and other organisations, primarily to provide scholarships, support academic programmes and facilitate development projects at The UWI. The Foundation has more recently intensified its focus on supporting the University’s scholarship programme because of the urgent and increasing demand for financial aid from many in the student population who are talented, ambitious and determined to break the cycle of poverty, but face severe economic hardships. In addition, the Foundation also seeks to facilitate activities which promote the well-being and strengthening of the West Indian society through community service, research programmes and public service endeavours for the preservation/creation of a robust cultural and social legacy.
