The UWI Global Campus, Barbados. Monday, September 16, 2024— The UWI Global Campus recently concluded its annual CXC Summer School 2024 programme with a closing and prize giving ceremony.
The ceremony which was held at the nearby Parkinson Memorial Secondary School Hall, was witnessed by Global Campus’ staff members, summer school tutors, students, and their parents/guardians, all gathered to celebrate the students’ achievements and recognise those who excelled academically and demonstrated exemplary behaviour.
Under this year’s theme "Igniting Success, Shaping Futures," the prgramme was designed to empower students to excel in their exams and beyond, offering expert instruction, personalised support, and interactive learning to help strengthen skills, deepen understanding, and boost confidence for academic success and excellence.
This year’s programme welcomed 116 students from older and newer public and private secondary schools across the island, who were enrolled in ten subjects within seven, distinct, but holistic domains. These domains included literacy and communication, social and emotional, cultural and arts, physical well-being, learning approaches and cognition, numeracy and mathematics, science and technology.
The programme secured sponsorship from several private sector organisations in Barbados, which provided awards for the top student in each CXC CSEC subject, those who exhibited good behaviours and conduct, and the secondary school which registered the most participants. This display of corporate social responsibility greatly contributed to the success of the programme.
In his remarks at the closing and prize giving ceremony, Mr. Ryan Byer, Head of Site, applauded the parents/guardians and students respectively for choosing and attending the Summer School programme (now in its 45th year), and expressed his hope that the knowledge and exposure gained will be beneficial as the students embarked on their CXC studies commencing in the Michaelmas term. He also thanked the tutors, sponsors, volunteers and organisations that provided developmental workshops and activities, as well as the staff members who worked diligently to ensure the success of the event. He emphasised that the Site will conduct its evaluation of all facets of the programme, with a view to ensuring continuous improvement for the 2025 edition of the programme.
Registration for CXC Summer School 2025 will be open in May 2025. To learn more, visit www.global.uwi.edu/barbados, email barbados@open.uwi.edu, or call 430-1120.
