The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Anguilla, Gender Affairs Anguilla and the Ebenezer Men’s Fellowship are collaborating to host another service in recognition of International Men’s Day. The event is slated for Sunday, November 20, 2022 at 5:30 p.m. at the Ebenezer Methodist Church under the theme “Making a Difference: Better Mental Health for Men and Boys”.
The programme will feature special selections by the Valley Primary School Boys’ Choir, the Seventh Day Adventist Men’s Ensemble and the Ebenezer Men’s Fellowship. Pastor Dr. Howard Simon will present the keynote address and three more men, Rev. Dr. Samuel Daniel, Mr. Carl T. Thomas and Rev. Lindsay K. Richardson will be recognised for making a difference in the lives of men and boys and the community at large.
International Men’s Day is celebrated annually on November 19th around the world. After several initiatives dating back to the 1960’s, it was relaunched in 1999 by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, a History Lecturer at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine. “The observance of International Men’s Day is based on six pillars, including the promotion of positive male role models and men’s health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality and creating a safer, better world,” says Manager for The UWI Open Campus British Overseas Territories, Dr. Phyllis Fleming Banks. “The hosting of this celebration is certainly in keeping with The UWI’s mandate. Gender equality and gender justice are also among the core values of The University and so we continue to work with organisations like Gender Affairs and the Ebenezer Men’s Fellowship to realise these goals in our communities,” she said.
“We are excited to collaborate once again with The UWI Open Campus, Anguilla and the Ebenezer Men’s Fellowship to observe International Men’s Day,” says Gender Affairs Coordinator, Ms. Kemoloy Murphy. “We remain cognisant of the fact that the contributions of men to society are not possible without a healthy mental state. The current theme is therefore most fitting as we continue to address concerns that impact the development and functioning of men and boys.”
According to President Mr. Elkin Lloyd, “The Ebenezer Men’s Fellowship is pleased to continue the partnership with The UWI Open Campus and Gender Affairs in celebration of International Men’s Day. Such initiatives enable us to fulfil our mission and commitment to making a difference in our community.”
