The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Anguilla launched Semester Two of the 2022/2023 academic year with a special Orientation/Meet & Greet Session to welcome the latest cohort of students in its online degree programmes. The January 11th face-to-face and online session was part of the activities to introduce the new Students to the University and follows the graduation of another record number of 53 students in 2022.
Among those on hand to welcome and offer support to the new Students were Site Staff, Ms. René Henry, Ms. Patricia Bryan, Mrs. Arlene Browne-Richardson and Manager of the British Overseas Territories Open Campus Sites, Dr. Phyllis Fleming- Banks. Also participating in the session were Chair of the UWI Open Campus Anguilla Guild of Students, Ms. Jahnesha Jones, Deputy Chair, Ms. Stephanie Ryan, Secretary, Ms. Marva Smith, and Community Liaison, Ms. Sherrine Brooks.
The Session included information on the role of the Guild of Students, the available support, scholarship and other opportunities, as well as tips on how to network and stay on course with their studies. The new Students expressed their appreciation to The UWI Staff and the Guild for the assistance provided thus far, as well as their excitement to embark on this new academic journey.
In her congratulatory remarks, Dr. Fleming-Banks thanked and commended the new Students for choosing The UWI – a University that is well-placed in the top 1.5 per cent of universities in the world. “You are very special,” she told the new Students. “You are entering The UWI during a most magnificent year, a year when we are celebrating our 75th anniversary, our diamond jubilee. Not only are you part of a distinguished institution that will provide you with a relevant, world-class education, you have also chosen a University that offers you the flexibility of achieving your goals at a fraction of external costs, without leaving your family or your jobs,” she said.
Other orientation activities for the new Students include attendance at the 75th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, January 22nd at the Ebenezer Methodist Chapel and “Freshers Day” on January 25, 2023 at 5:30 p.m. at The UWI Open Campus.
With the Semester Two for online students underway, The UWI Open Campus Anguilla is now registering participants for its local, Continuing and Professional Development Programmes that are scheduled to begin during the first week of February.
