The Honourable Dr Keith Rowley to Give Live Address at UWI in Jamaica

The UWI Regional Headquarters, Jamaica. 18 July 2016  – Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago, The Honourable Dr Keith Rowley will address a town hall meeting at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Regional Headquarters, Mona, Jamaica on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. (Jamaica time). The address is scheduled among a number of other activities surrounding Dr Rowley’s first official visit to Jamaica as Prime Minister.

Also significant of the visit, is that Dr Rowley is the most recent of a long list of UWI alumni to hold the position of Head of Government in the region; he graduated from The UWI Mona Campus in Jamaica in 1978 with a Ph.D. in Geology after also obtaining his B.Sc. (1973) and M.Sc. (1975) there. Prior to the town hall meeting, he will be given a brief tour of the Mona Campus and will be inducted into “Prime Minister’s Park” in honour of UWI graduates who are or have been Heads of Government.

Dr Rowley’s schedule also includes meetings with The Honourable Andrew Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica, Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of The UWI and some of the University’s Senior Management as well as Trinidad & Tobago students of UWI, Mona.

Vice-Chancellor Beckles hailed the visit of Prime Minister Rowley as “Another momentous occasion for The UWI family”. He added, “The UWI has had the honour of celebrating the elevation of many as Prime Minister, Premier, or Minister of their various Caribbean countries, and is proud to have had a hand in the moulding of so many distinguished Caribbean leaders. We’re looking forward to hosting Dr Rowley on his first visit to The UWI’s Regional Headquarters and welcoming the eminent Mona alum. The Republic of Trinidad & Tobago is a great friend of The UWI and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).  This visit gives us an opportunity to express our thanks, demonstrate the gains made with the support of Trinidad & Tobago and other governments of the region and share our vision on the way forward”.
