The UWI Open Campus Wins OAS Bid to Deliver Resilience Training

Friday, June 21, 2019 - The University if the West Indies (The UWI) Open Campus has been successful in its bid to the Organisation of American States (OAS) for the Chile OAS Scholarships for CARICOM countries project. The project is for the delivery of training in specific areas of building regional resilience in member states.
As a result of the winning bid, The UWI Open Campus will deliver training programmes at the certificate level in three CARICOM states in the coming weeks, namely Barbados, Belize and Trinidad and Tobago.
The training in Barbados will focus on Post-Disaster Business Continuity Management; in Belize it deals with Water Quality Monitoring and Urban Flood Management; and in Trinidad and Tobago the focus is on Water Quality Management and Plumbing Essentials for Disaster Recovery.
The training programmes in the three countries are fully funded by the OAS and the Government of Chile through full scholarships to successful applicants. The programmes will be delivered at the Open Campus Country Sites in the respective countries starting in early July. In Barbados, the course will be held from July 1 – 4, 2019 at The UWI Open Campus Barbados, The Pine, St. Michael.
The training course in Trinidad and Tobago will be held from July 1 – 26, 2019 at The UWI Open Campus, Carapichaima Centre, while the course in Belize runs from July 15 – 18 at The UWI Open Campus Belize, Princess Margaret Drive, Belize City.
Under the programme, 30 scholarships will be offered to citizens of Barbados and Belize to pursue the respective courses, and 50 scholarships will be offered to citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. A total of 110 persons will be trained under the programme.
“The success of The UWI Open Campus’ bid for this important OAS training project signals the vital role the Open Campus plays in building the region’s human resource capacity and its agility in delivering programmes across member states,” explained Professor Julie Meeks, Acting Principal of the Open Campus. “I encourage citizens of the three countries to take full advantage of these training opportunities as the areas of focus are critical to building and maintaining the resilience of the region,” Professor Meeks stressed.
