Introduction to Counselling

This course is designed to stimulate mastery of basic listening, action responses and self-management strategies and provides the opportunity to acquire basic communication and interviewing skills. Using a problem-solving model, students learn how to work with clients to identify issues and through role playing, practise and demonstrate new skills. It provides an exploration of the concept of relationship as the critical ingredient to effective helping and provides the opportunity to acquire basic communication and interviewing skills in working with clients to resolve issues using the problem-solving model, empowering and relationship building.

The Occupational Environment

This course concentrates on human health risk and psychosocial concerns and explores these in context of sectoral safety. Industrial hygiene forms the basis of this course as well as the natural environment which is introduced as important to understanding of the work environment. Upon completion, students should be able to identify and quantify common occupational health hazards.

Fundamentals of Written English

Written English Fundamentals is a 13-week course (3 hours each week) that allows students to develop competence in academic and professional writing. Students will develop the skills to evaluate that writing ability in themselves and their peers. This course therefore requires the full participation of students in every class. The course provides students with the opportunity to participate in collaborative learning to encourage critical thinking and appreciation for the ideas of others.

Introduction to Quality Management Systems

The course is designed to introduce participants to the International Standard for Quality Management Systems. It will equip them with tools to evaluate quality systems within their organisations and implement a QMS that would assist significantly in overcoming shortcomings. Participants will also be given an overview of strategic planning and the role of QMS in ensuring its alignment with operational/project work and what it involves. They will be introduced to Operational planning and control, product and service requirements and customer communicated needs and requirements.

Facility Operation and Maintenance is the heart of Facilities Management. Why? Because Operation and Maintenance is big business and as such should be well organized closely managed and run like a business. Effective maintenance management has the end result of extending the useful life of any facility so today’s Facilities Manager is being forced to become leaner and meaner striving to become more productive, quality conscious and cost effective. This course allows participants to study the maintenance range allowing them insight to acquire knowledge and skills to improve the maintenance function within a cross section of different organizations.

Supervisory Management

This course provides students with an understanding of the management functions Supervisors must perform. It is designed to introduce students to the role and responsibilities of a Supervisor. Students will receive solid theory and practical application that reinforces the essence of supervisory management working with and through people.
