Course Description

Conflict is a feature of everyday life which may be effectively managed to preserve roles, rights, responsibilities and relationships to enable parties to move beyond the conflict Mediation tool has been successfully used to resolve a variety of conflicts. It use is increasing because it allows disputing parties to maintain control over issues and make decisions which affect their lives which lead to lasting resolutions.

This Advance Mediation Program is designed for participants who have completed the UWIOC introductory mediation course or courses with similar course content It is aimed at honing the skills learnt and providing participants with the opportunity to develop and improve their effectiveness as a mediator. Participant will develop in-depth knowledge and first-hand experience in conflict resolution.

The course is designed for individuals who are interested in using mediation more meaningfully as a means of dispute resolution in their jobs or in developing a career as a mediator. With the likelihood of mediation being used as the alternative dispute resolution mechanism of choice by the courts and legislation, it is hoped that the successful participants in this course will have gained the knowledge, skills and ethics required to be considered among the cadre of mediation professionals.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course participants will be able to:

  1. Define terms, concepts and core values which are key to mediation
  2. Obtain and verify the necessary information when solving a dispute through mediation
  3. Use the numerous conflict analysis models for a better understanding of the problems the clients are faced with
  4. Design efficient mediation strategies, on the basis of the information obtained through conflict analysis
  5. Effectively utilize the caucus
  6. Understand the special -requirements and considerations of court annexed mediation.
  7. Understand and be able to complete the various standard forms, including the agreement to mediate.
  8. Draft mediation agreements
  9. Develop the following
    1. Making effective openings
    2. Active listening skills
    3. Ability to build accord with participants d. Greater impartiality and neutrality

 

  1. Deal with ethical dilemmas.  Understand the limits of their skills and the limits of the mediation process
