Introduction to Computers

Course Description

The University of the West Indies Open Campus is proud to continue its adult and continuing studies programme in Belize with the introduction of its Computer Studies Programme in September, 1999.  This programme fits within a growing body of programmes that we are offering to meet the demands of self-qualification in today’s’ complex world.

This certificate will give you the basic skills to use a computer, including word processing, Internet , spreadsheet and database usage, desktop publishing and graphics, local area network usage, and maintenance of personal computer systems.

Course Participants - Who Should Attend

Persons, whose aim is to improve on their own skills, are the prime candidates. We especially welcome primary/ secondary school teachers and adult learners, who have to get the prerequisite qualification for progress in their careers.

School leavers and mature students and will help anyone understand the basics of a computer.

Course Objectives

At the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify basic parts and functions of the computer hardware
  • Provide user care to minimize computer malfunction
  • Know how to use the software applications – e.g. Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
  • Know how to browse the Internet, send email and perform online research
  • Make sound decisions about buying a computer for personal use.
  • Use computer technology to solve a specified problem.
  • Describe the management and use of computers in an organisation
  • Demonstrate and apply knowledge of a personal computer system
  • Manage and protect data in a personal computer system
  • Use and maintain personal computer peripherals
  • Demonstrate knowledge of ethical issues for computer users
  • Develop and use keyboarding skills to enter text
  • Exchange messages using electronic mail
  •  Retrieve, produce, save and print text on a computer
  • Enter and manage text for generic text and information management
  •  Use data entry skills to input computer data
  • Apply language and text processing skills to produce communications
  • Use a word processor to produce documents
  • Create documents and manage files for generic text and information management
  • Create and enhance documents combining text and images for generic text and information management
  • Integrate text and images and refine file management for generic text and information management
  • Exchange information with an online computer service
  • Produce a simple desktop published document to meet a set brief
  • Produce computer graphics using base functions
  • Produce simple schematic diagrams using a computer application
  • Create and use a simple computer spreadsheet to solve a problem
  • Integrate spreadsheet and database data into a word processed document to solve a problem
  •  Produce a spreadsheet from instructions
  •  Create a computer spreadsheet to provide a solution for organisation use
