Course Description
Conflict is a feature of everyday life which may be effectively managed to preserve roles, rights, responsibilities and relationships to enable parties to move beyond the conflict. Mediation tool has been successfully used to resolve a variety of conflicts. It use is increasing because it allows disputing parties to maintain control over issues and make decisions which affect their lives which lead to lasting resolutions.
This Certificate Program is aimed at introducing participants to conflict resolution and Will focus on mediation. It will provide a practical and general understanding of mediation and will examine the various stages of the basic mediation process, the role of the mediator, and will afford participants the opportunity to practice some basic techniques of negotiation and help them develop their personal style.
A brief overview of restorative justice and victim offender mediation will be given however the main focus of the course will be on basic mediation techniques.
The course is designed for individuals who want to learn the basic theory and skills of mediation and is useful for application in resolution of workplace disputes, social problems and personal or community disputes. It may help participants advance in their present job as well as add a desirable skill to their repertoire and may be employed by social workers in the resolution of family and community based issues.
Course Objectives
Participants will be able to
1. Identify the causes of conflict, and develop the tools needed to handle various elements of a conflict.
2. Apply dispute-resolution skills learnt to conflict situations
3. Analyze conflict and identify where mediation may be successfully applied towards its resolution
4. To actively listen and identify hidden interests in conflict
5. Understand the significance of cultural and societal influences in conflict
6. Understand the basic concepts of mediation
7. Implement the practical skills, strategies, and techniques necessary for successful mediation,
and apply enhanced negotiation skills
8. Understand and apply skills for working through impasse in mediation
9. Demonstrate and successfully approach resolution of conflicts from a position of neutrality,
impartiality and confidentiality in mediation
10. Understand some basic strategies of negotiation in a mediated setting
11. Understand the fundamental ethical considerations of alternative dispute resolution
12. Assess the potential of restorative justice in addressing crimes and consider the concept of justice
and the place of mediation within the legal system.
