Course Description
The Certificate Program in Labour Law is aimed at providing participants with a general overview and survey of labour law. Labour law, in a narrow sense, is that body of law which governs the employment relationship. In a broader sense (according to Deakin) labour law is looked at as the normative framework for the existence and operation of all the institutions of the labour market: the business enterprise, trade unions, employer’s associations, and the state as regulator.
The course will cover the major areas of labour law, beginning with the nature of the employment relationship and the distinction between employees and other types of workers; the employment contract including implied terms; breach of contract, remedies, wrongful and unfair dismissal. The course will also cover industrial relations, collective bargaining, and trade unions and how those impact labour law.
