Principles and Practices of Coaching

Course Description

Through an examination of various texts, videos and practical exercises, the interactive course will introduce students new to coaching to the delivery of sport programming from a pedagogical perspective. Students already involved in coaching will be provided with a basis from which tore-examination their own values, priorities and forms of practice.

Course Objectives

At the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Display behaviours and standards expected of a coach, and self-evaluate to improve their coaching performance;
  2. Clarify and declare their own coaching philosophy;
  3. Manage a coaching program by leading, and working effectively with others
  4. Describe and utilize the essential components of coaching practice;
  5. Plan and prepare for coaching athletics in the micro, meso and macro cycles in an age-appropriate manner;
  6. Manage the safety requirements of coaching;
  7. Demonstrate a range of approaches to coaching and methods and communication techniques;
  8. Formulate their own guiding principles for decision-making that can be passed on to students;
  9. Effectively use feedback and interaction in coaching;
  10. Teach and demonstrate effectively;
  11. Adapt their coaching program to include and cater for a range of individual needs;
  12. Assist athletes to develop and improve skills;
  13. Develop activities to improve an athlete's physical abilities;
  14. Recognise structures and movement of the body in order to analyse performance;
  15. Take into account growth and development considerations when coaching a range of athletes;
  16. Assist athletes to use nutritional strategies for sports performance;
  17. Use basic psychological training skills to assist athletes prepare for sports performance;
  18. Advise athletes regarding anti-doping issues.
