Introduction

This continuing and professional education (CPE) programme in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management is comprised of 90 contact hours which are geared towards equipping individuals with the foundation knowledge, skills and competencies required to become a business owner or an entrepreneur. The programme seeks to provide theoretical as well as practical knowledge so that individuals have the best chance of success. 

Who is this programme for?

The target group is anyone who has an interest in becoming a business owner/entrepreneur or a person who has already started a business but wishes to add to their skill set. Persons who have a genuine interest in starting their own business or in small business management and entrepreneurship are also invited to apply. 

Programme Structure

The programme consists of three courses. These may be taken together for the completion of the Certificate or participants may be permitted to complete any course for the award of the Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

  • Entrepreneurship and Business: Theory and Practice
  • Effective Management and Leadership
  • Financial Planning for Small Business

Entry Requirements

There are no defined prerequisites to enter the programme. However, participants should have a genuine interest in the subject matter. It is anticipated that all students will have good written and verbal communication skills. Kindly contact an Open Campus Site location nearest to you for further information on the application process.

Assessment Structure

A model of continuous in-course assessment will be applied to all courses within this programme. Students will be assessed at different intervals over the duration of each course which may include written examinations. Assignments may also include but are not limited to: case-based activities, practical assignments, presentations and other projects.

Financial Planning for Small Business

Participants will be exposed to the basic accounting methods and practices that are required for a small business or for an entrepreneurial activity.  Participants will produce a financial plan as they investigate the market to look at what effect achieving sales targets will have on their business.

Effective Management and Leadership

This course will increase understanding and awareness of managing staff, and developing leadership skills.  Areas to be covered will include theoretical underpinnings to discuss leadership and management, human resource management, motivation and reward, conflict resolution and managing self.

Entrepreneurship and Business: Theory and Practice

Participants shall be exposed to a variety of theoretical underpinnings that guide entrepreneurship and small business development. Through the development of a small business plan, the participant shall be provided with practical and real-life examples of small business management and entrepreneurship. The course will include advertising, marketing and promotion techniques such as segmenting your market, understanding brands and planning how to sell your products or services.
