INTRODUCTION
This continuing and professional education (CPE) programme in Property and Real Estate Management is comprised of ninety (90) contact hours geared towards equipping individuals with the foundation knowledge, skills and competencies required to function at the entry to intermediate level in property and real estate management. The programme seeks to provide individuals with an overview of the basic tools, techniques and the general knowledge on which foundation they could build or strengthen a career in property and real estate management. There are no specific pre-requisites for entering the programme, however, candidates are expected to have successfully completed secondary school or an equivalent level of education. Given that each subsequent course will be building on the previous course(s), it is expected that the pre-requisite for entering courses two, three and four will be the successful completion of the previous course.
PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES
On successful completion of this programme, participants will be able to:
- state the role and functions of a property manager
- identify the main laws governing residential, office and commercial properties
- describe various methods for financing real estate acquisition and operations
- define the basic elements of a contract
- prepare a property operating budget
- prepare a property maintenance schedule
- analyse market rental data
- develop a marketing plan for a property
- assess the suitability of tenants for the various classes of property

ASSESSMENT STRUCTURE
In-course, learner focussed, continuous assessment will be used to assess the learners. These assessments will be at varying levels so as to effectively cover the full range of the course. They will include examinations that are multiple choice; essay type; individual assignments; group assignments and presentations.

COURSE DESCRIPTION
INTRODUCTION TO REAL ESTATE LAW: This course offers an overview of the legislative framework of the Anglophone Caribbean. Participants will be introduced to the principles of contract formation, covering aspects of breach, remedies and misrepresentation. This course also seeks to provide an overview of the concept of Agency, in view of helping participants understand the duty of care owed to their clients and the third parties. Participants will also be exposed to concepts of land law that speak to the establishment to rights in real property and the various relationships that can exist.
MANAGING PROPERTY: This course offers insight into the various professions that can be pursued in the field of Real Estate Management, along with the various property types that a professional could encounter and the factors that need to be considered in order to efficiently and effectively manage not only property, but the expectations of the client. It seeks to provide participants with an understanding of the dynamic nature of Real Estate Management by exploring what the management of property entails.
REAL ESTATE ECONOMICS & APPRAISAL: At the end of this course, participants should be able to discuss the basic economic principles of demand and supply and apply them to the Real Estate market. Participants should be able to apply introductory economics concepts to the ‘real world’ to discuss what factors affect the real estate market and how it influences the industry. Participants will also be required to demonstrate an understanding of how the value of money changes over time, in order to understand how it relates to property transactions. Furthermore, the various methods of valuing property will also be explored in order to for them to differentiate among the various methods and utilizing best-practice.
