Introduction
Business etiquette is a powerful and practical tool. Knowing how to conduct oneself not only makes you more confident, it provides you with the tools for creating productive relationships in a dynamic business environment. Etiquette proves to be a very useful skill in the knowledge economy where there is greater job mobility and an increasing need for collaborating across teams and requires taking on board different cultural and generational sensitivities in this very diverse market. This course covers the basic principles of etiquette, and how it enhances your interaction skills. It looks at all aspects of your professional image — from body language and dress to networking and how to an interview with self-assurance.
Emphasis is placed on showing students how to perfect their personal brand by equipping them with the tools to refine their social graces, confidence and etiquette knowledge, Students learn how to develop and sharpen your business conversation skills. Participants are afforded a unique opportunity to benefit from a hands-on dining tutorial on how to make a great impression at the table when engaging in business entertaining; inclusive of toasting; and; American and Continental styles of eating. This course gives a contemporary analysis of business etiquette; to creating connections, forging credible partnerships and increasing the participants’ net worth.
Purpose
This is a foundation course towards completing the programme in the Continuing Professional Education (CPE) Protocol and Soft Diplomacy Certificate. The course aids participants to identify and articulate their personal brand. Students benefit from a practical dining workshop resolving any uncertainties about navigating the place setting, correctly using utensils, and some essential dinner table manners. This course covers human relations, interpersonal communication and team building all of which encompass skills that are critical to business success and can be major contributing factor in the region’s goal to achieve prominence in the global economy.
Aims and Objectives
The aim of this course is to provide students interested in business etiquette with the necessary tools from human relations, interpersonal communication and team building skills to successfully navigate the business world. The course is designed for students interested in diplomacy. Students will become familiar with the various application of etiquette rules, with tips and tactics from experts that will give them a competitive edge in a world where collaborating across diverse teams is critical to success. After successfully finishing the course students will gain the knowledge necessary to conduct corporate diplomacy activities. This course moves students beyond the basic aspects of business etiquette to cultivate a level of personal leadership skills necessary for success in civilian, business, and various career settings.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Define etiquette and understand how it is valuable to companies and other organisations.
- Identify the ‘Three Cs’ of a good impression.
- Implement techniques to minimise nervousness in social situations.
- Explain how the expectations of workplace behavior and social behavior can differ based on the generations
- Define professional behavior and suggest standards for appearance, actions and attitude in a professional environment
- Respond professionally to clients, via emails, on the telephone and meetings
- Outline steps for dealing with difficult people, disputes, insults, embarrassment or distractions in the workplace
- Demonstrate knowledge of place settings, napkin etiquette, and basic table manners.
- Outline the steps involved in corporate entertaining
- Differentiate between different Styles of Eating: American, British, Continental, and Asian

This course is divided into 10 units. Each unit is the equivalent of one week’s work.

ASSESSMENT
The Assessment for this course is a combination of four components; course work, Group Project - Protocol plan, Individual Portfolio – final exams. Presentation will be conducted throughout the course and participants are required to take part in pair work, small group and large group work.
Students must obtain the pass mark of 40% in each of the two components to be credited with this course.
EVALUATION
The final grade in this course is a combination of the coursework marks and the final examination mark. However, candidates are required to obtain a passing mark in EACH of the two components: coursework and final examinations, i.e. minimum of 40% for each, to be credited with a pass in a course.
