Introduction

This Continuing Education Course, Transformational Leadership to Achieve the SDGs in Developing States, aims to provide learners with a functional knowledge of the fundamentals and concepts of leadership and transformation to design, monitor and execute inter-sectoral development projects and programmes. With the acquisition of this knowledge and skills learners will be in a position to lead focused, high-performing teams and apply sound results-based management principles within the framework of the 2030 development agenda.  By building a cadre of professionals trained in transformational leadership and the delivery of results based on the BFR™ Methodology, this course will help to correct implementation deficit challenges, and thereby, build stronger and more sustainable institutions in the Caribbean.

By the end of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Evaluate the importance of pursuing sustainable development goals (SDGs) as it relates to their social, political, economic and geographical contexts;
  2. Strengthen national capacity to mainstream SDGs in national policies and inter-sectoral development plans;
  3. Integrate the principles of transformational leadership (inherent in the Big Fast Results (BFR™) Methodology) and leadership for sustainability to achieve the SDGs;
  4. Identify the unique challenges faced by Developing States in implementing the SDGs;
  5. Prioritise the SDGs and targets based on the strategic direction or focus of their country;
  6. Utilise the BFR eight (8) step methodology for effecting transformational leadership and operationalizing national development plans in developing countries in various geographic regions;
  7. Apply the principles of transformational leadership to their local contexts, with emphasis on organisational models and leadership approaches that promote sustainability, encourage partnerships and winning coalitions between business, government, academia and civil society;
  8. Adhere to transformational leadership principles that are geared towards maintaining a balance between people, planet and prosperity;
  9. Apply key knowledge and skills to effectively lead in operationalizing the SDGs and implementing tactics for winning high-risk/high-stakes negotiations;
  10. Demonstrate situational leadership, effective sustainability leadership, organisational psychology and business ethics in the attainment of the SDGs in their institutions. 

Who is this Course for?

The target audience for the course are policy makers; mid-career professionals; technical officers, social workers working in national institutions for planning, sustainable development, finance, social protection, development practitioners, NGO managers, business leaders and managers of corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes in private sector companies.

This course will specifically target persons who prefer to study in the online mode for various reasons, such as financial constraints, family commitments and work commitments.

The Continuing Professional Education Course, Transformational Leadership to Achieve the SDGs in Developing States is divided into eight (8) Modules and comprises forty contact hours equivalent to 4 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

Module 6: Ensuring Transparency and Accountability (BFR Methodology Step 3 - 5)

Module 7: Implementation and Results (BFR Methodology Steps 6 - 8)

Entry Requirements

Applicants must currently work in the Development field must meet the University’s normal matriculation requirements in order to be accepted into the programme. They must satisfy the requirements in either (a) or (b) or (c) or (d) below:

(a) As entrants with CXC-CSEC and GCE qualifications achieving the below standards:

  • An acceptable pass in CXC-CSEC Mathematics or its equivalent; AND
  • An acceptable pass in CXC-CSEC English A; AND

One of the following minimum qualifications:

  • Either five subjects (at least two GCE A Level or CAPE) and the remainder acceptable passes in CXC-CSEC or GCE O’ Level; OR
  • Four subjects (at least three GCE A Level or CAPE) and the fourth an acceptable pass in the CXC-CSEC or GCE O’ Level;
  • Grade requirements for CXC/CSEC subjects are General Proficiency, Grades I or II pre-1998 and Grades I, II, or III from June 1998.

(b) Holders of five (5) CXC-CSEC or GCE O-Level passes or equivalent, not necessarily obtained at the same sitting.

(c) Entrants with a Diploma, Certificate or UWI or another approved Caribbean tertiary level institution, having attained a B+ average or a minimum GPA of 2.5.

(d) Persons over the age of 21 who have been out of school for at least five years, based on their overall academic and professional attainments.

Mode of Delivery

The programme will be delivered fully online using the Open Campus “Learning Exchange” environment (Moodle/Learning Management System).

Assessment Structure

This course consists of formative and summative assessments.

Formative Assessment

Formative assessment tasks, which are considered as developmental, will be diagnostic but not be used for final grading. A variety of collaborative and individual tasks will be used as a means for students’ self-assessment to ensure their understanding of the course content. These tasks will allow students to assess their understanding of the course material, gauge their progress and identify and take the necessary actions towards meeting their learning needs.

Summative Assessment

Specific activities throughout the course will be used to determine overall achievement. Assessment criteria and rubrics will be provided for each of these activities. These tools will help guide the undertaking of these activities as well as encourage self-assessment.

Educational Resources

Where appropriate, materials will be made available to learners online in the Open Campus Learning Exchange for download.  Participants will be required to procure recommended textbooks using their own resources to acquire them via online or hard copy purchases.

Requirements for the Award Certificate

In order to qualify for the award of the Continuing Education Units (CEUs), students must attain a total of forty (40) hours.
