60th Anniversary Celebrations

Our History

In earlier days, social welfare was conducted from the verandas of the elites in the society.  It was a voluntary and informal occupation with little or no thought being given to training of the workers.  With the change in times, persons providing assistance to the needy were required to function at an agreed or standard level of competence.

The Social Work Training and Research Centre (SWTRC) formerly Social Welfare Training Centre dates its beginning as a regional training unit within the Extra Mural Department of the University of the West Indies (UWI) from 1962. Today, it is a unit within the Consortium for Social Development & Research (CSDR) of the UWI, Global Campus.

The  Centre which was  established with support from the  Government of Jamaica was handed over to the then Director of Extra Mural Studies, Hon. Hector Wynter by the Minister of Development and Welfare, Hon. Edward Seaga.    Although the Centre was built by the Government it was intended to serve the entire Caribbean.  The Centre was established to meet the needs of persons working in the broad field of social work, either as professionals or voluntary workers in those recognized agencies who did not have the benefit of professional training in social work.
