On Friday, February 13, 2026, The University of the West Indies proudly hosted the Autism Professional Development Graduation for Cohort 1 at the Learning Resources Unit Section — marking a groundbreaking achievement for our nation.
This programme, the first of its kind in The Bahamas, was birthed out of a vision by Mrs. Bridgette Cooper, Head of the UWI Global Campus Site, Bahamas. Recognizing the urgent need for greater training, awareness, and understanding of the autistic community, she championed this initiative to ensure educators and professionals are better equipped to support students with autism across our islands. Her commitment to inclusive education is helping to transform lives and classrooms throughout The Bahamas.
We were deeply humbled to have as our guest speaker, Carlton Pinder, Founder and CEO of Pure Life International, who delivered powerful and inspiring remarks that reminded us of the importance of purpose-driven service and community support.
We were also honored by the presence of our distinguished special guests:
• Nicole Phillips, Acting Director of UWI
• Terrice Curry, Deputy Director, Ministry of Education
• Leja Burrows, Assistant Director of Education
• Agatha Archer, President of the Council for Preschool Teachers
• Dr. Mortimer Moxey, President of the UWI Alumni Association
• Dwayne Gibson, Chairman of REACH
Cohort 1 has set the standard for excellence, compassion, and advocacy. This graduation represents more than certificates — it represents a movement toward greater inclusion, understanding, and empowerment for the autistic community in The Bahamas.
Congratulations to all our graduates! The work you have begun will impact generations to come.
