COURSE RATIONALE
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the concepts and principles of sport leadership used throughout the sports industry and various sporting organizations. Through this course, students will learn skills related to creative problem solving and strategic planning, while developing the skills to lead, organize, and delegate in managerial and leadership positions
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course examines concepts and principles of leadership as they relate to a variety of sport and exercise settings. The course provides students with an overview of these leadership concepts and principles based on assigned readings and weekly discussion assignments focusing on current events or important material from the readings. Students will apply the knowledge gained from lectures, assignments, discussion assignments and readings to a developing a sport leadership portfolio..
LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
- Summarize and critique peer-reviewed journal articles in the area of sport leadership.
- Critically examine concepts and principles of leadership in a variety of sport and exercise settings.
- Evaluate and distinguish theoretical perspectives on leadership and leader development.
- Analyze the role and responsibility of a sport manager and evaluate associated management skills.
- Evaluate different managerial positions in sport organizations and classify the characteristics of a successful leader.
- Analyze challenges faced by sport organizations and develop strategic solutions to address these challenges.
- Apply concepts and principles of sport leadership in practical sport settings.
- Produce final sport leadership portfolio that is indicative of course learning in each their desired occupational setting
