World Social Work Day 2024

The outreach activity was part of the annual World Social Work Day celebrations hosted by the SWTRC.  This year’s theme, ‘Buen Vivir: Shared Future for Transformative Change’, emphasises the need for social workers to adopt innovative, community-led approaches that are grounded in indigenous wisdom and harmonious coexistence with nature.  By being outdoors and engaging the children, the Centre exhibited communal responsibility for the well-being of the Earth’s inhabitants.

Replenishing Vegetable Garden
The Hope Valley Experimental School (HVES) children and degree students planted vegetables in the school’s garden. Through planting the students were exposed to cultural practices, participation in establishing food security, and volunteerism.

Breathing to De-stress and Relax
The HVES students were exposed to breathing and relaxation techniques.  With help from the chief instructor of Kalisse Kelly Yoga Studios, the children learned 6 breathing methods to release tension, increase energy and improve focus.

Beautifying the SWTRC Green Space
Members of the Mona Social Work Students Association volunteered to amplify the beautiful green spaces of the SWTRC. Adding more flowers to the space will enhance the mental well-being of students and passers-by who visit the garden for study or relaxation.

World Social Work Day is observed every year on the third Tuesday in March. The day recognizes the hard work and diligence of social workers. On this day, a global organization of social workers advocates for social justice, human rights, and social development while promoting the best practices in social work.
