Are scholarships available for graduate students?

Graduate students are emailed when scholarship opportunities are available.

Are the scholarships offered only on a need basis?

Scholarships are not only offered on a needs basis, there are academic scholarships and involvement in community or voluntary services, e.g. Youth/Service Clubs can also be priorities.

Can I pick up the status letter at my Site?

You are able to pick up a copy of your letter at your Site.

Can my grades be included in a status letter?

We currently do not include grades in status letters, however, you may request a transcript which will provide your grade information by emailing transcripts@open.uwi.edu

Can my refund cheque be sent to the Site?

Students who applied for a refund and are eligible will receive cheques at their local Site once they are processed.

Can my tuition payments be listed in a status letter?

Tuition cost can be listed in a status letter, however, tuition payments made can only be provided in a Statement of Account provided by the Office of Finance.

Can the status letter be emailed to me?

Status letters are emailed to students, with a copy being sent to the Site.

Can the status letter be sent directly to the recipient?

Status letters can be sent directly to the recipient via courier which will attract an additional cost.

Does the UWI Global Campus offer scholarships?

Scholarships are offered by and through the Global Campus.

How are refunds of tuition calculated?

Refund of tuition is pro-rated as follows:

  • Semesters 1 and 2: Before the end of week 1 - 100%
  • Before the end of week 2 - 75%
  • Before the end of week 3 - 50%
  • Summer: Before the end of week 1 - 100%
  • Before the end of week 2 - 50%

How can I become a Member of the Guild?

All students of The UWI have automatic membership to the Guild of Students. However, to become a student leader, you must be a currently registered student in good academic and financial standing with The UWI. There are several active student associations at the Global Campus Sites, called Guild Chapters where students can become active members, to mentor their peers and to serve the community. There is also an ongoing drive for Guild Chapter Development for new interest to ensure that all Global Campus Sites have student representation.

How do I apply for a course exemption?

You may apply for an exemption using the Google form that is sent out by email to ALL students at the beginning of each semester for Procedure 1 and first semester only for Procedure 2. The Google forms are also available on the Student Portal under the Forms and Booklets: Student Support section.

How do I apply for a scholarship?

You can apply for scholarships using the application forms that are sent out to students via email. Scholarships applications are sent either directly to Office of the Board of Undergraduate Studies(OBUS) or to scholarship.applications@open.uwi.edu depending on the scholarship. How do I benefit from online learning?

Online learning is beneficial for you since you will not be bound to physical class session when you opt for online education. All your facilitators and needed materials are provided via your online platform - the Learning Exchange, so you’ll easily access them from the comfort of your home. You will not take public transport to get to campus, you won’t have to spend money on gas for your car, you won’t have to get up early to get dressed for class…Just access your courses online and learn at a self-paced environment at your convenience.

How do I qualify for a scholarship?

To be qualified for a scholarship, typically students should:

  • Maintain a GPA average of 3.0 or higher
  • Be involved in extracurricular activity
  • Demonstrate financial need

How long will it take to process my exemption request?

Once the application form is closed, the exemption process usually takes about three weeks to receive a response for a Procedure 1 exemption request. (Students who receive exemptions will note the changes in their academic records before official correspondence are prepared.) However, Procedure 2 will take longer because the faculty has to make a comparison of each course and its content. Procedure 2 response will be available prior to the start of the next semester.

How quickly can I get a status letter after a request is made?

The processing time for status letters is five (5) business days.

How will I see my instructors?

Once you have registered for your courses and teaching has started you will have access to your instructors/facilitations in the courses for which you have registered via the Learning Exchange.

If an exemption is granted, how would I know?

Once an exemption is approved, students would see a change on their record on the student portal and they would receive an official correspondence shortly after.

Is it possible to sit an exam away from my Site?

It is possible to sit exams away from your local site. If you want to sit your exams at another site, please advise the Assessment and Records Department at exams@open.uwi.edu

Is there a cost for a status letter?

Yes, the cost for a status letter is US$5 or the local equivalent. This should be paid as you would have done for your tuition.

Is there a fee to receive/apply for course exemptions?

We do not charge to process exemption requests.

Is there a GPA requirement to apply for a scholarship?

Students usually need to have a cumulative and degree G.P.A of 3.0 or higher to apply for a scholarship.

Is there an age limit to apply for scholarship?

Sometimes there are age limits for some scholarships. This can vary depending on scholarship.

What are the types of course exemptions?

There are two types of course Exemptions:
EC – Exemption with credit. (Students who receive exemptions with credit do not have to resit the course)
EX – Exemption without credit. (Students will need to take another course in its place to obtain credits.)

What can I use a status letter for?

A Status Letter may be used for the purposes of applying for a loan, a visa or to provide enrolment information to an employer.

What does the UWI Open Scholarship cover?

The UWI Open Scholarship covers the cost of tuition, residence costs (on/off campus) and contributions to books and meals.

What if I lose my refund cheque?

A type of scholarship where a sum of money is allocated from internal funds.

What is a grant?

A sum of money given by a government or other organization for a particular purpose.

What is a status letter?

A Status Letter provides information about your enrolment status and will include information such as: name of programme, enrolment date, courses completed, number of courses remaining, etc.

What is course exemption procedure 1?

Procedure 1 course exemption is for students who see the exemption(s) requested listed on the Approved Exemption Listing.

What is course exemption procedure 2?

Procedure 2 course exemption is for students who do not see the course(s) listed on the Approved Exemption Listing

What is course exemption with credit?

Students who receive exemptions with credit (EC) do not have to resit the course.

What is course exemption without credit?

Students who are granted exemptions without credit, would need to seek a replacement course for each EX awarded.

What is course exemption?

A course exemption is receiving an excuse from taking a specific course that is otherwise required. This excuse is usually dependent on the fact that you have completed a course that is equivalent in nature.

What is supporting documentation?

PROCEDURE 1: Supporting documentation includes transcripts only.
PROCEDURE 2: Supporting documentation includes transcripts and course outlines.

The primary purpose of the Guild of Students is to enhance the student's university experience. Student Leadership serves as the link to the Administration of The UWI and promotes and develops the educational, social, economic and cultural interests of the students.

What is the UWI Global Campus Guild?

The Guild of Students (GOS) is the official body for student representation at the University of West Indies (The UWI). The Guild was established in 1951 as the Guild of Undergraduates and in 1996 was changed to the Guild of Students to provide representation for both undergraduate and graduate students. The UWI Global Campus’ Guild is guided by the University of The West Indies, Global Campus, Guild of Students’ Constitution 2012. Elected officers of the Guild of Students represent students on all the main decision making boards and committees of the University including its academic, planning, finance and committees.

What is the UWI Toronto Gala?

The UWI Toronto Gala Scholarship award is available to Jamaican Nationals who are registered full-time in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Science and Technology, Humanities & Education & Social Sciences; and entering level two (2) of their degree programme.

Scholarship funds are paid once the funds are received from the donor(s).

You can apply for scholarship once the scholarship application is still open and available. Scholarships are applications that are sent out via email and or posted on our website.

When can I apply for course exemptions?

Students are able to apply for exemptions at the beginning of each semester. An online form is sent out to all students to complete and submit. The form is also available on the Student Portal. Students are required to send the relevant documents for processing.

Who provides status letters?

Status letters are provided by the Office of the Campus Registrar through the Student Support Department.

Who qualifies for a refund?

Students are only eligible for a refund if they are in good financial standing with the University. Students are eligible for a refund if the scheduled programme/course is cancelled by the Global Campus. Students are eligible for a refund of a portion of tuition costs if they withdraw from the University or request Leave of Absence in writing before the end of the third week of semester classes or the second week of summer classes. Students may be eligible for a refund of a portion of tuition costs if they change their registration by dropping a course before the end of the third week of semester classes or the second week of summer classes.

Who qualifies for course exemption?

Students who successfully completed the same or a similar course at another institution or with one of The UWI sister campuses are qualified for an exemption.

Why are there two procedures for course exemptions?

There are 2 procedures used for applying for exemptions. Procedure 1 is for students who see their institutions on the approved exemption listing that is sent out at the beginning of the semester and Procedure 2 is for students who do not see their institutions on the exemption listing.

Why do I need to submit a transcript?

Transcripts are submitted, when applying for exemptions, to confirm GPA and grade(s) you received for courses completed at previous institutions.

Why do I need to submit course outlines when applying for procedure 2 exemptions?

Course outline includes course description, number, title, topics and course requirements. It is a document that outlines the structure of a particular course. Course outlines are used to compare the content to the UWI Open Campus course(s) to verify similarity.

Why does it take so long to receive notification on exemptions requested?

Unfortunately, correspondence is not prepared until after the go through process is completed which might take two (2) weeks to three (3) months depending on the procedure.

Will there be improvements in the course exemptions process?
